Well
it took a few games but the Piccolo Grande Double Dippers finally registered
their first "W" since graduating to the 5th division of the
Traveller's Hockey league.
After
a rude welcoming, courtesy of a 10 to 2 largley self-inflicted drubbing
at the hands of the Division leading Bitheads our hear-eos from the
Ice Cream Shoppe suffered a series of heart breaking 1 goal defeats
until managing a tie with aforementioned Bitheads - a game they shoud've
won. But on this night the Piccolo crew would not be denied.
A
total team effort from the crease on out. Battling through 5 shorthanded
situations, forwards backchecking bravely to the defensive zone backboards,
defenceman blocking shots and keeping attacking Bulldogs in their cage,
it was a thing of guts and beauty to behold. What 5hole didn't stop
his posts took care of, his skating brethern streaking back taking the
man and clearing away rebounds the resulting shutout was in the books.
And then...
the play of the game. With mere seconds left on the clock and what looked
like the makings of a double shutout zero-zero tie
Darrell "The Dancer" Anderson took charge. Forechecking furiously
he slid a dope pass to Dan "Rudimentry" Ruddy who in turn
figured "Hey like lets give this here puck thang to the young gun
Chris "ChawDaddy" Verdon and see what he kin dew. Well young
Chawdaddy made no mistake on his final scoring chance, sliding across
the front of the net he waited until the Bulldog netminder committed.
With the Bullish keeper prone as a pancake he lifted the frozen disc
from a near impossible angle into the back of the net bulging the twine
for the winner with all of 7 seconds left on the clock. Needless to
say the Piccolo bench erupted in cheers, 5hole did a victory dance in
his crease and the members of the massive crowd both went wild.
Lockout
?? What lockout !!! ;o)
