Piccolo Grande 6
/ Remax Spitfires 0
Wednesday Sept.8th, 2004 10:30
Ottawa “U”
Hey there sports
fans and welcome to another season of hockey Piccolo Grande style. Now
the boys in
NHL may be going on strike but, much to the delight of hockey enthusiasts
everywhere the men
of the Travellers Hockey league are not. The closest we’ll ever
get to having to a celery cap is lettuce in our helmets. Ahh
but I digest onto the game at hand.
The
Piccolo line up for the 2004 -2005 season has changed a bit. No longer
with us are 2 long standing and stalwart members both of whom will be
sorely missed. Mr Greg “Popstar” Popoff has taken his show to Switzerland where he will be yodelling away his time in his
new career as the Regional Alpine Swiss Miss inspector. The second member
is none other than the man with the soft hands and wicked shot Mr. Michel
“Pappy” Papillion. Returning however from a year long stint as a spare
player for Piccolo is the former Captain and scoring firebrand Mr. Eric
“The Rage “ Romainca. We’d also like to take
this opportunity to welcome to the team newcomers Dan “Rudimentary”
Ruddy and young Matt” The Ratt” Pearce son
of our current Captain Terry “Ragger” Pearce.
Again I digest or perhaps that was just a burp… in any event on with
the game.
Not much to report
really. The first period started out fairly even but slowly but surly
(I am not a fairy and don’t call me Shirley) the
boys from the ice cream shop took over. By the end of the first period
they had taken a 3 to nothing lead. The second period was more of the
same save for a couple of spurts of energy that saw the Remax
Spitfires buzz the Piccolo end forcing their goaltender Andy “5hole”
Sommerfeld to actually contribute to the impending shutout.
Piccolo added 3 more goals to salt this one away. Of note of course
was Eric Romanica with his hat trick and the contribution of new Piccolo
spare Chris “The vacuum” Verdon. Not only
did he knock in 2 goals, skate a couple of Rideau
canals but was on every puck like a Hoover on a hairball.
The Remax goalie did his best to keep the score respectable with
some fine saves.
