Round 12 - July 11, 2000, Le Vieux Moulin
It was a beautiful day, it was a beautiful course, it was a beautiful first 15 holes, and then the wheels fell off! Kevin Brady, Phil Gaulin, and my arch nemesis, John
Larose joined me at Le Vieux Moulin for an 11 o'clock tee off. The sun was shining brightly, the wind was blowing, and beautifully huge white clouds were scattered
across the intensely blue sky. Le Vieux Moulin is situated on the North side of Aylmer. It's only one year old and has the promise of being the best course in the
area. The bent grass fairways are a little patchy, the tee boxes are mostly in different states or resodding, but the greens are immaculate.
The course is rated 70.5 off the blues, 68.4 off the whites, with slopes of 116 and 111. It's a beautiful layout with just enough water and sand. The fairways are, in
general, narrow but the sides are liberally marked with red and yellow stakes except for a few holes, especially number 17, which we'll get to later!
Everyone played quite well on the front, even Kevin who has only been out once prior to this round. I didn't get everyone's scores on the front as Johnny was
scoring, but I took the lead with a paltry 95, taking three pars, a double, and a triple on a par three. The back moved along quite well until 13 where I three putted. I
came back with two bogies and then lost my mind. As we walked up to 16 Kevin suggested we play Bingo, Bango, Bongo. Longest drive, first on, and first down.
Up until this point I had played percentage golf for the first time in my life and it was working, but the guys had been ribbing me from around the thirteenth for not
using my driver. Most of the holes made it very simple to play a 2 or 3 iron off the tee and be 170 to 100 from the green, so that's what I'd been doing until then.
Kevin just wanted to see me pull out the driver. Well it worked. Out it came for only the third time that day and my tee shot wasn't too bad fading just off the fairway
at about 220 into a heavy wind. I proceeded to duff the next two shots, get on in 4 and three putt for a 7 on the 456 yard par 5.
Seventeen! What an idiot. Instead of sticking to the game plan I pull out the driver again and sliced one out of bounds. After Kevin hits, I step up again and hook one
out of bounds. I put the driver back in the bag and proceeded to slice a two iron shot out of bounds. The boys started walking so I followed. I never found any of
the three balls. As all good golfers know, if you hit out of bounds you must hit again. The "provosional" ball. I should have hit a fourth. In lieu of that I dropped where
my last ball went out and played lying 7 (first ball, 1; second ball, 3: third ball, 5; fourth ball, 7!). I put it on from there and two putted for the moose! Eighteen wasn't
much better, taking a 7.
Phil sank two amazing putts on 17 and 18 paring both, and Johnny pared the eighteenth to tie Phil with 88! Congrats to Johnny for breaking 90 once again before
yours truly. Kevin came in with a very respectable 105. Excellent for second round of the year! I came home with a miserable 99 and an adjusted score of 96. I hit
only 3 fairways, 3 greens, and took 33 putts. Craaaaaaap!
Well, I get another chance tomorrow on the same course. Hope springs eternal for golfers! Keep on swinging!
