Round 7 - Monday, June 12, The Dome
Well today was a true test. After 4 rounds at the Champlain and two at The Loch March I was ready for the Dome. It's a beautiful short course 5465 off the whites and 6010 off the blues. But ya gotta keep it straight! Practically everything is out of bounds, and the fairways
are very narrow. It's rated at 66.6 and it's slope is 118 off the whites and is 68.8 and 122 off the blues. It's a great course to find balls on, and also a great course to lose
a few. If you're lucky you'll find more than you lose!
I teed off at 9:07 with Lino "the Luckcharm" Disipio (my hair stylist), Eli Saikley, the owner of the Silver Scissors Hair Design Studio, and their good friend Peter. Lino
and Eli have generously donated prizes for the 'Round the World Challenge Golf Tournament Wednesday July 26.
We had a gorgeous day, sunny and around 16 degrees at tee-off. It warmed up nicely to 20 degrees by the time we were done. The front proved to be a bit of a disaster
for "the Luckcharm" He had a few bad holes went out with a 61 although he took a par on 6! Eli went out with a 52. I had a 49, and Peter led the way with a 47. The
back was a little tougher on the mind although better for all of us on the scorecard. Lino came in with 48 for 107, I took a 47 for 96, Eli had 46 for a 98, and Peter took
the round coming in with a 46 for 93.
My hole of the day came on the par 5 16th. It's rated as the eighth handicap hole but I think it's the toughest on the course. It's 430 off the whites but it's' 230 to the
dog's leg straight up a very steep hill. It plays like 260. This was my moment of Zen. As Shivas Irons would say, "It's in yee!" It's the inside focus, and I was in the zone.
I swung through the ball and visualized the flight of the ball. It came down on the top of the hill with 193 to the green. I hit my second shot with my three but caught it a
little fat and ended up in the short rough in front, just under the green, 25 yards to the pin. I popped up my third with my sand wedge and rolled it 6 feet past. I putted for
bird but missed right and long 3 feet. I drained the three footer for my first of two pars, the second coming on the 18th.
I took 34 putts, had 7 F.I.R., and only 2 greens in the round, but my play on the 16th and 18th made up for any mistakes I had made earlier. I have finally conquered the
Dome. If I don't crack 90 next round at The Champlain I'll, I'll, I'll………
